Family & Lineage

The noble family of Hazrat Ali (RA) — from the house of Abu Talib to the blessed Ahl al-Bayt

إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا

"Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you with thorough purification."

— Quran 33:33 (Ayat al-Tathir)

Paternal Lineage

Father

Abu Talib ibn Abd al-Muttalib

أَبُو طَالِب بن عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِب

Abu Talib was the leader of the Banu Hashim clan and the uncle and guardian of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). When the Prophet's grandfather Abd al-Muttalib passed away, Abu Talib took the young Muhammad into his care and raised him as his own son. He remained a steadfast protector of the Prophet even during the harshest years of persecution in Mecca. His home was one of faith, nobility, and generosity.

Mother

Fatima bint Asad

فَاطِمَة بِنْت أَسَد

Fatima bint Asad was among the earliest Muslims and one of the most respected women of her time. She raised Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as her own child when he was orphaned, caring for him with such love that the Prophet himself called her "my mother." When she passed away, the Prophet placed his own shirt in her grave as a mark of honor — an act of extraordinary love and respect.

The Blessed Marriage

Wife

Fatima Zahra (SA)

فَاطِمَة الزَّهْرَاء

Fatima Zahra (SA), the beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Khadija (RA), was given in marriage to Ali by divine command. The Prophet declared, "Had Ali not existed, there would have been no match for Fatima."

Their marriage is revered as the most sacred union in Islamic history. Despite living in extreme simplicity — their home had nothing but a mat, a pillow stuffed with palm fibers, and a water skin — their household radiated faith, love, and spiritual light. Together they are the parents of Hasan, Husayn, Zainab, and Umm Kulthum — the blessed progeny through whom the lineage of the Prophet (PBUH) continues.

Fatima is honored with many titles: al-Zahra (The Radiant), al-Batul (The Pure), Sayyidat Nisa al-Alamin (Leader of the Women of the Worlds), and Umm Abiha (Mother of Her Father).

Children of Ali & Fatima

Imam Hasan (RA)

الحَسَن

The eldest son, known for his generosity and wisdom. He became the fifth Caliph briefly and chose peace by signing a treaty with Muawiyah to prevent further bloodshed in the Muslim community. His name means "The Good" or "The Handsome." He was the most resembling of the Prophet in appearance and character.

Imam Husayn (RA)

الحُسَيْن

The Prince of Martyrs. His courageous stand at Karbala in 680 CE — facing an army of thousands with only 72 companions — is one of the greatest sacrifices in human history. The Prophet said, "Husayn is from me, and I am from Husayn. Allah loves the one who loves Husayn."

Zainab bint Ali (RA)

زَيْنَب

The embodiment of patience and courage. After the tragedy of Karbala, she carried Husayn's message to the world. Her fiery sermons in the courts of Ibn Ziyad and Yazid exposed tyranny and preserved the truth. She is known as "The Heroine of Karbala."

Umm Kulthum bint Ali (RA)

أُمّ كُلْثُوم

Like her sister Zainab, she endured the tragedy of Karbala with immense courage. Known for her piety, eloquence, and patience, she stood alongside Zainab in bearing witness to the events at Karbala and its aftermath.

Noble Ancestry

Clan

Banu Hashim of the Quraysh

Ali ibn Abi Talib belonged to the Banu Hashim, the most noble and respected clan of the Quraysh tribe — the same family as Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). His lineage traces directly through:

  • Ali ibn Abu Talib ibn Abd al-Muttalib
  • Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim (founder of Banu Hashim)
  • Hashim ibn Abd Manaf
  • The line continues to Adnan and ultimately to Prophet Ibrahim (AS)

This makes Ali a first cousin of the Prophet — Abu Talib was the Prophet's uncle and guardian. Ali grew up in the Prophet's household from a young age, further deepening the bond between them.

Ahl al-Bayt — The People of the House

The Prophetic Household

The term Ahl al-Bayt refers to the family of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). While its exact composition is discussed by scholars, the most widely accepted narration states that the Prophet gathered Ali, Fatima, Hasan, and Husayn under his cloak (the event of al-Kisa) and prayed:

"O Allah, these are my Ahl al-Bayt. Remove from them all impurity and purify them completely."

— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Hadith al-Kisa, Sahih Muslim)

The love of Ahl al-Bayt is considered obligatory upon every Muslim. The Quran states: "Say: I ask of you no reward except the love of my kin" (42:23). Through Ali and Fatima, the blessed lineage of the Prophet continues — the Sayyids and Sharifs who trace their ancestry to this noble family today number in the millions across the world.
