Ali in Prophetic Hadith

Famous sayings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about Hazrat Ali — from Sahih collections and other authentic sources

1

Hadith of Ghadir Khumm

"Whomsoever I am the Mawla (master/guardian) of, Ali is also his Mawla. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him."
📚 Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Musnad Ahmad, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, al-Hakim

Context

Delivered at Ghadir Khumm on 18th Dhul Hijjah, 10 AH, during the return from the Farewell Pilgrimage. The Prophet stopped at Ghadir Khumm, gathered approximately 100,000 pilgrims, and delivered this declaration. This is one of the most widely transmitted (mutawatir) hadiths in all of Islamic literature.

2

Hadith al-Manzila

"You are to me as Harun (Aaron) was to Musa (Moses), except that there is no Prophet after me."
📚 Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim

Context

Spoken by the Prophet when he left Ali in charge of Medina during the expedition to Tabuk. When Ali expressed disappointment at being left behind, the Prophet consoled him with this comparison — Harun was Musa's brother, deputy, minister, and the one he trusted above all others.

3

Hadith of the City of Knowledge

"I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate. Whoever wishes to enter the city, let him enter through the gate."
📚 al-Hakim (al-Mustadrak), al-Tabarani, Ibn Adi

Context

This hadith establishes Ali as the foremost authority on Islamic knowledge after the Prophet. It explains why Ali was considered the most knowledgeable companion and why scholars from all schools of thought have traced chains of knowledge back to him.

4

Hadith al-Thaqalayn

"I am leaving among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah (the Quran) and my Itrah (progeny), the Ahl al-Bayt. If you hold fast to both, you will never go astray after me."
📚 Sahih Muslim, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Musnad Ahmad

Context

Spoken during the Farewell Pilgrimage, this hadith places the Ahl al-Bayt alongside the Quran as the two indispensable guides for the Muslim community. Ali, as the head of the Ahl al-Bayt after the Prophet, is the primary figure through whom this guidance is transmitted.

5

Hadith of Love and Faith

"None loves you except a believer, and none hates you except a hypocrite."
📚 Sahih Muslim, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa'i, Musnad Ahmad

Context

The Prophet made love for Ali a criterion of faith itself. This hadith indicates that love for Ali is inseparable from true faith (iman). Ali himself narrated this hadith, saying: "By the One who split the grain and created the soul, it is the covenant of the unlettered Prophet to me."

6

Hadith of the Standard at Khaybar

"Tomorrow I shall give the standard to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love. Allah will grant victory at his hands."
📚 Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim

Context

After multiple failed attempts to conquer the fortress of Khaybar, the Prophet made this declaration. Every companion hoped to be chosen. The next morning, the Prophet called for Ali — who was suffering from an eye infection — healed his eyes with his blessed saliva, and gave him the standard. Ali then conquered the fortress single-handedly.

7

Ali with Truth, Truth with Ali

"Ali is with the Truth, and the Truth is with Ali. They will never separate until they meet me at the Fountain (of Kawthar on the Day of Judgment)."
📚 Ibn Asakir, al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, al-Haythami

Context

This hadith declares Ali as the embodiment of truth itself — wherever Ali stands, truth is with him, and wherever truth is, Ali is found there. This became a foundational principle for understanding Ali's positions during the political conflicts of his era.
